Beginning Writing Styles – Mental Notes for Mommy

I have learn many things through trial and error or heck just by

simply living my life. Something may happen and I say

“Make a Mental Note…Remember that for next time.”
There are different font styles individual schools use to teach your child to begin writing the alphabet.

I was not aware of this at all.  My sister is a kindergarten teacher’s assistant.  Knowing my oldest is in his last year of Pre-K she ask how he was doing with the beginning stages of writing his letters.  She them told me to make sure I knew what font style method his school district used.  I had no idea that every school district had a choice of what style that want to teach.

In the US specifically, there are 2 different styles commonly used are:
Zaner-Bloser Method and the D’Nealian System

Zaner-Bloser tends to be the dominant method.

D’Nealian System is getting more and more popular.
This system was specifically designed to alleviate the problems with teaching children the transition from standard Zaner-Bloser script method and cursive writing.  The D’Nealian style manuscript has many similarities to the cursive version. With using the D’Nealian manuscript, there’s minimal transition. This feature is what has made the D’Nealian System become more popular among teachers in  the USA.
So if you are teaching your child how to write his/her letters or you are reviewing what he/she is learning in school, make sure you know which style your school district is using.  They can of course learn either way but it will be more confusing for your child if you are teaching them differently than their school.  It is important in the early stages of learning to be consistent.  Once they learn a specific way it is hard to change theirr ways later.
Mental Notes For Mommy is just a fun way to share something I’ve learned and certainly don’t want to forget. It may be something new, funny, serious, or a tip I thought would be good to  share with the rest the mamas out there.  Because as always, we all are doing our best to survive the chaos of everyday life in the trenches of motherhood.

Hi Nicole! I found you through BF and am now following. I love your idea of Mental Note for Mommy, and also your passion for Green Living. As for the letters, it caught me by surprise when I purchased the Preschool Prep Series DVDs for my 4 year old that there is an option of 2 different lowercase case "a"s. It never dawned on me before that some of the print our kids will be seeing have conflicting a styles.Lizhttp://thejostesfamily.blogspot.com
